The Cost of Discipleship
"Then He said to them all: 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.'" - Luke 9:23-24
Jesus' words here are profound and challenging. He calls each of us to a daily decision, to deny ourselves, to abandon the pursuit of our own comfort and plans, and to follow Him wholeheartedly. This isn't a one-time choice but a continual surrender, a daily taking up our cross, which symbolizes embracing His mission and sacrifice.
Sometimes, following Jesus involves sacrifice, hardship, and letting go of our own desires. But Jesus assures us that in losing our lives for His sake, we find true life, abundant and eternal. The path of discipleship is about surrendering the temporary to gain the eternal.
Imagine someone walking along a trail, heavy with a backpack filled with personal worries, ambitions, and distractions. Jesus steps beside them and says, "Deny yourself, let go of what weighs you down and follow me." Each day, we’re invited to lighten our load by surrendering our plans and doubts, trusting that in losing ourselves to Christ, we truly find purpose and eternal life.
Consider what areas in your life you might need to surrender anew. Is there a desire, fear, or ambition that stands in the way of wholehearted following? Ask Jesus for the strength and humility to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Him each day.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to deny myself and pick up my cross daily. Teach me to trust in Your sacrifice and follow You wholeheartedly. May I find my life in You, and may my life reflect Your love and purpose. Give me the courage to surrender all that I am to You today and every day. Amen.
