Finding Strength in Obedience and Faith
“But Jonathan had not heard that his father had made the command; so he reached out with his staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and his eyes brightened.” — 1 Samuel 14:27
Johnathan was unaware of the oath his father had made, an oath that had hold of the soldiers, preventing them from eating to regain strength before battle.
Despite this, Jonathan’s instinct was to trust in God’s provision and to nourish his body, knowing that his confidence was ultimately in the Lord’s strength.
In that moment, Jonathan’s eyes "brightened" because he tasted the honey, a symbol of divine provision and refreshment. His decision to eat, even when it went against orders, was fueled by a belief that God’s power was greater than any human command or obstacle.
This story speaks volumes about trusting God’s ways over human limitations or fears. Sometimes, we find ourselves bound by rules, fears, or the opinions of others, limits that may hinder us from stepping into what God has called us to do. Yet, Jonathan’s example reminds us that when we align our actions with God’s truth, we will find strength and clarity.
God’s provision, His “honey,” is available when we step out in faith. It’s in trusting Him that our eyes are opened, and our spirits are refreshed. Obedience may sometimes mean risking misunderstanding or opposition, but faith in God’s power makes all things bright and possible.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the example of Jonathan’s fearless faith. Help me to trust in Your provision and strength, even when it seems risky or countercultural. Give me the courage to obey You and to taste the sweetness of Your blessing. Brighten my eyes with hope and confidence as I walk in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
