Assured Before Him
“And hereby we know that we are of the truth, shall assure our hearts before him.” - 1 John 3:19 (KJV)
John writes to believers who wrestle with assurance. False teachers have unsettled them, and their own hearts sometimes accuse them. Into this uncertainty, John offers a grounding truth: assurance is not built upon flawless performance, but upon the transforming evidence of truth at work within us.
“Hereby we know that we are of the truth.” The Christian faith is not abstract belief alone; it is lived reality. In the verses surrounding this one, John speaks of loving “in deed and in truth.” Genuine love for others becomes visible evidence that God’s truth has taken root in the heart. When love moves from word to action, it testifies that we belong to Christ, who first loved us.
Assurance, then, is relational. It is not merely confidence in doctrine, but confidence before God. “We shall assure our hearts before him.” The phrase suggests calming a troubled conscience in God’s presence. Believers still battle doubt and self-condemnation, but the fruit of love becomes a witness that grace is active within them.
This does not mean we earn assurance by good works. Rather, love is the evidence of new birth. A changed heart produces changed behavior. When we see the Spirit’s work, however imperfect, it steadies the soul. We look not to our worthiness, but to God’s work in us.
John’s emphasis directs us away from introspective fear and toward gospel confidence. The truth that saves also transforms. And the transformation, though gradual, speaks.
1 John 3:19 invites us to bring our hearts before God honestly. When doubt whispers, we remember that love is evidence of life. When conscience trembles, we rest in the One who knows us fully and holds us securely.
The truth that saves also steadies the heart before God.
Prayer:
Father, when my heart is unsettled, remind me of the truth of Your saving work. Grow in me a love that reflects Christ, and grant me assurance in Your presence. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
