Confidence When God Is for Us
“When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.
In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word. In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.” - Psalm 56:9–11 (KJV)
David writes these words from a place of conflict and uncertainty, yet they overflow with remarkable confidence. Surrounded by enemies and threatened by those who seek his harm, he anchors his hope in a truth greater than his circumstances: “God is for me.” This declaration is not wishful thinking; it is a statement of covenant faith.
“When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back.” David does not rely on strategy or strength alone. His first response to danger is prayer. The cry of the faithful heart calls upon the sovereign God who governs every outcome. Though enemies may gather and threaten, their power is limited by the will of the Lord.
David’s confidence is strengthened by the Word of God. Twice he declares, “In God will I praise his word.” Praise and trust are intertwined. God’s promises become the foundation upon which courage stands. Even before deliverance arrives, David celebrates the reliability of what God has spoken. The Word of God steadies the soul when circumstances attempt to shake it.
The passage culminates in a bold resolve: “I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.” Fear loses its grip when the believer remembers who stands on their side. Human power, though real, is temporary and limited. God’s power is eternal and absolute.
These verses reveal that courage in the life of faith does not come from ignoring threats, but from recognizing God’s presence and promises. When the believer knows that God is for them, opposition loses its ultimate authority.
When God is for us, fear no longer holds the final word.
Prayer:
Faithful Lord, remind me that You are for me. Strengthen my trust in Your Word and quiet my fears when opposition rises. Help me turn to You first in every trial. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
