The Holy Examination of the Heart
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” — Psalm 139:23–24
At the close of Psalm 139, David shifts from declaring the all-knowing nature of God to inviting that very knowledge to rest upon him personally. What began as theology becomes surrender. The God who searches all things is now asked to search him.
“Search me, O God.” This is yielding. To ask God to search the heart is to relinquish self-deception. Scripture teaches that the heart is deceitful, often concealing motives even from ourselves. Yet nothing is hidden from the Lord. To invite His searching is to welcome truth over comfort.
“Try me, and know my thoughts.” The word “try” carries the sense of refining, like metal tested by fire. David is not merely asking for exposure, but for purification. He longs for a heart aligned with God. True holiness is transformation at the level of desire and thought.
“And see if there be any wicked way in me.” This is a plea for divine diagnosis. Sin is not always loud; often it is subtle, embedded in attitudes, assumptions, and affections. David does not defend himself, he opens himself. He does not minimize sin, he asks for it to be revealed.
“And lead me in the way everlasting.” God’s searching is never aimless; it is redemptive. He reveals in order to restore, exposes in order to lead. The “way everlasting” is the path of righteousness, marked by obedience, sustained by grace, and secured in covenant relationship with Him.
This passage calls us beyond surface faith into surrendered examination. It invites us to trust that God’s knowledge of us is not for condemnation, but for sanctification. To be fully known by God and still led by Him is the deepest assurance of grace.
So come before Him honestly today. Let Him search, refine, and lead. For the God who knows you completely is the same God who guides you faithfully.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, search my heart and reveal anything that is not pleasing to You. Refine my thoughts and lead me in Your everlasting way. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
