Rivers from Within
“He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” — John 7:38 (KJV)
In the midst of the great feast, Jesus Christ stands and cries out, inviting the thirsty to come to Him and drink. He is a saying that He alone is the source of true and eternal satisfaction. In a world marked by spiritual dryness, an overflowing cup of life.
The promise is true: “He that believeth on me…” Faith is the conduit. Not just acknowledgment, but a deep, abiding trust in the person and work of Christ. To believe in Him is to receive Him fully, to rest in His sufficiency and yield to His lordship. This belief transforms the inner life.
Then comes the astonishing result: “out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” The imagery shifts from receiving to overflowing. The one who comes thirsty does not remain merely satisfied, they become a source. The “belly,” or inner being, speaks of the heart, the center of life and desire. From within the believer, something divine begins to move outward.
As John later explains (John 7:39), this living water is the Holy Spirit, given to those who believe. The Spirit does not simply dwell, He flows. He renews, empowers, convicts, and comforts. He produces fruit that nourishes others and testifies to the life of Christ within. What begins as personal transformation becomes outward ministry.
This challenges a self-contained faith. The life of the Spirit is not stagnant, but dynamic. If the rivers are not flowing, we must ask whether we are truly abiding. The Spirit’s work in us is meant to extend beyond us, bringing life to dry places, hope to weary souls, and truth to searching hearts.
Christ does not call us merely to be filled, but to overflow. The deeper we draw from Him, the more freely His life will flow through us.
Come to Him today, not only to drink, but to become a vessel of His living water. For the one who believes does not simply live, they give life.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, fill me with Your Spirit, that Your life may flow through me. Teach me to abide in Christ and become a source of living water to those around me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
