When Injustice Surrounds You
“Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.
They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul. Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.” - Psalm 56:5–7
David’s words reveal the painful reality of being misunderstood, misrepresented, and targeted by others. His enemies twist his words, distort his intentions, and watch his every move. The language suggests calculated hostility, people gathering, hiding, and waiting for an opportunity to destroy him. This opposition is deliberate and relentless.
The phrase “they wrest my words” captures a familiar human experience. Truth is bent, motives are questioned, and statements are reshaped to create accusations. Such attacks wound deeply because they strike not only at circumstances but at reputation and integrity. David does not dismiss this suffering. Instead, he brings it honestly before God.
God sees what others distort. While enemies may manipulate words and intentions, they cannot hide their hearts from the Lord. Every scheme, every whispered accusation, and every hidden plan stands fully exposed before divine justice.
David then asks a sobering question: “Shall they escape by iniquity?” In other words, can evil ultimately prevail? His prayer calls upon God’s righteous judgment. This is a cry for divine justice. David entrusts the outcome to God rather than seeking retaliation himself.
Scripture consistently teaches that God defends truth and confronts injustice. Though the wicked may seem to prosper for a time, their schemes cannot escape the scrutiny of heaven. God’s justice moves according to His perfect wisdom and timing.
Psalm 56:5-7 invites believers to respond to false accusations and hidden hostility not with bitterness, but with prayerful trust. God sees what others twist. He hears what others misrepresent. And He remains the righteous judge of every human heart.
Prayer:
God, when others distort my words or intentions, help me trust Your justice. Guard my heart from bitterness and remind me that You see all things clearly. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
